Talks and Presentations

CTF@Work, School, or Anywhere: How Organizations Can Use Games to Improve Security Awareness. I presented this 45-minute talk at the 2018 Portland B-Sides Conference. In it, I describe how the creation of a self-paced Capture-the-Flag game boosted our efforts to engage our developer community to learn about application security. I posit that gamification of technical topics is a successful approach to encourage people to challenge themselves to learn new skills.

I include a description of the motivation behind the gamification effort, the challenges we faced, lessons learned, and results we obtained. I also go into some of the technical design details about how the game system worked.

Organizing the Chaos: Managing Request Tickets in a Large Environment. Proceedings of the 13th Large Installation Systems Administration conference (LISA XIII), pp. 51–66. USENIX, Seattle, Washington. November 1999. I presented this paper at the 1999 LISA conference, where I described the transformation of our computer support helpdesk, with a focus on the creation of a custom ticket tracking system (which I had personally authored).

Videos

I created a Youtube channel to share random technical and personal topics of interest. Due to some changes in how Youtube decided to manage their relationship with their content creators, I have (at least for now) moved my videos to Vimeo instead. I have a number of ideas for future topics I plan to add as time permits, but so far I have:
